Chargers to give Nick Novak a chance

By Bill Williamson

It will be Nick Novak's job to kick the San Diego Chargers into the playoffs.

The veteran won the place-kicker's job over veterans Shayne Graham and Dave Rayner, according to ESPN’s John Clayton. Novak is being signed to replace the reliable Nate Kaeding. He was lost for the season when he tore his ACL while trying to make a tackle during  Percy Harvin's 103-yard kickoff return for a touchdown on the opening play of San Diego’s 24-17 win.

Novak, 30, has bounced around the NFL, but he hasn’t kicked in a regular-season game since 2008. He is 19-of-30 on field goals in his career. The San Diego native was with the Chargers last summer and he was recently cut by the Jets.

The Chargers like Novak’s leg, but it is a tad scary that a playoff-caliber team is going to have to rely on a kicker with just 30 career field-goal attempts. But that’s life in the NFL when you adjust for injuries.
