Schefter: Jackson's future is uncertain
By Bill Williamson
ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Monday morning on “SportsCenter” that the future of Oakland coach Hue Jackson is still “uncertain.”
Schefter reports that Jackson and new Oakland general manager Reggie McKenzie will talk Monday. There have been reports that McKenzie may opt for his own coach in Oakland. There also have been reports that Jackson is likely to stay. McKenzie and Jackson share the same agent, so that certainly could help bridge any gap that may exist.
McKenzie is scheduled to be introduced at a news conference on Tuesday. I’m sure Jackson’s future will be a focal point during that session. If I had to guess, I’d say he is safe, but I do know how new general managers like to bring in their own staff.
If McKenzie opts to go that direction, Green Bay assistants Winston Moss and Joe Philbin could be on McKenzie’s radar. Philbin interviewed for the head-coaching job in Kansas City. That job is expected to go to interim coach Romeo Crennel any day now.
In other AFC West news:
Schefter reports Jacksonville will have to reschedule its interview with Denver offensive coordinator Mike McCoy because the Broncos beat Pittsburgh and are preparing to play at New England on Saturday. The Broncos’ offensive performance in a 29-23 overtime win over the Steelers on Sunday shouldn’t hurt McCoy’s candidacy in Jacksonville.
Schefter reported Monday morning that Denver quarterback Tim Tebow has a contract escalator that gives him a $250,000 bonus for each postseason win.
Both the Chiefs and the Chargers have some decisions to make prior to free agency.
The Denver Post reports Broncos receiver Eric Decker likely suffered an MCL sprain in Sunday’s win over Pittsburgh. That would put him out of the postseason, but on target to be fine for all of the offseason workouts.
Here is another report saying former Kansas City coach Todd Haley is about to rejoin the Cardinals’ staff. Haley was Arizona’s offensive coordinator when the Chiefs hired him in 2009.
