Is Larry English ready to contribute?

By Bill Williamson

As the San Diego Chargers plan to unleash rookie pass-rusher Melvin Ingram, a former first-round pick is showing signs that he may finally be ready to contribute.

While most of the focus is on the explosive Ingram, Larry English has put together a nice preseason. He had two sacks against Minnesota last week and he now has three sacks in the preseason. English, the No. 16 overall pick in the 2009 draft, had a total of seven sacks combined in his first three NFL seasons.

The key for English is his renewed health as he missed a total of 19 games the past two seasons. English has been healthy so far this year and he is finally showing the pass-rushing burst that he had at Northern Illinois.

Matt Williamson of Scouts Inc. thinks that in addition to his health, English is finally used to the NFL's speed after playing at a small college.

“English looks like he is finally feeling the heat for a roster spot,” Williamson said. “English does have ability.”

Williamson thinks English has limitations in coverage, but I’m sure the Chargers would gladly settle for some situational pass-rushing burst from English at this point.
