Chargers may need to make LT plans

By Bill Williamson

U-T San Diego is reporting Chargers’ left tackle Jared Gaither was getting an MRI on Tuesday and that the team is preparing to play without him at Oakland, which has one of the best defensive lines in the NFL, in 13 days in Week 1.

He has been out for a month. Regardless of the MRI results this is not a good situation. I could see the Chargers looking for tackle help after the final cuts if Gaither doesn’t make a fast recovery. Gaither is a fine player, but he has a history of back issues, so this could be problematic for a team that was decimated by injuries on the offensive line last year.

If the Chargers don’t add someone as insurance for Gaither, the other choice is undrafted rookie Mike Harris. Harris has played honorably, but is he really up protecting Philip Rivers’ blindside in the regular season?
