Osweiler has key game in familiar setting
By Bill Williamson
Brock Osweiler is used to getting a lot of playing time in the desert.
Thursday night would be no exception. However, it may be the last time Osweiler plays in a game until next year. The Denver Broncos’ second-round pick is expected to play a lot Thursday night in the preseason finale at Arizona. Osweiler played at nearby Arizona State.
He knows he will be playing in front of plenty of friends and family in the game. However, most importantly, Osweiler knows he must impress his Denver coaches. After this game, Osweiler is not going to be in the game-preparation mix and his preparation will dry up. He will go back to being a thought for the future.
He wants to leave his coaches with a good game-day impression.
“This is really my last opportunity to go out there and show the team, show the coaches what I can do in a game opportunity,” Osweiler said in quotes distributed by the team.
Osweiler will likely be the No. 3 quarterback in 2012 with a chance to be move up to No. 2 next year and then take over as the starter after the Peyton Manning era, which likely won’t be until 2015, at the earliest. Osweiler feels like he has made continued strides as he begins his Denver tenure.
“Shoot, looking back all the way to rookie minicamp, I felt like I was drowning,” Osweiler said. “I looked at that playbook and really had no idea where to begin. Now, I’m at a point where I’m fairly comfortable with the offense and I’m understanding what (offensive coordinator) coach (Mike) McCoy and the rest of the coaching staff is trying to do as an offensive unit. Things are getting better every day.”
