McKenzie begins new era in Oakland
By Bill Williamson
OAKLAND -- The changing of the guard of the Oakland Raiders is happening in front of my very eyes.
New general manager Reggie McKenzie just strode across the field, looking sharp in a business suit. Several fans noticed McKenzie and greeted him with cheers. He waved and pumped his fist in acknowledgement. He then strode to the Black Hole and shook hands and chatted with fans.
Monday officially marks the beginning of McKenzie’s tenure as the general manager of the Raiders as they host the San Diego Chargers. Al Davis led the team from 1963 until his death last October at the age of 82. The team proceeded the rest of the season without a replacement.
A former Oakland linebacker, McKenzie was the team’s top choice to succeed Davis as the general day-to-day football operations leader in January. During training camp, I spoke to McKenzie about his new role. Monday, it all begins.
