McClain reinstated, role unclear
By Bill Williamson
The Oakland Raiders’ late-season roster tinkering continued with several moves Monday.
In addition to the release of cornerback Ronald Bartell, fullback Owen Schmitt was released.
Linebacker Rolando McClain was reinstated after a two-game team suspension and cornerback Chimdi Chekwa was promoted from the practice squad.
In a release, the team said McClain is not required to return to the team until he meets with coach Dennis Allen. Allen suspended McClain on Nov. 30 for conduct detrimental to the team. Allen is in Texas for his father’s funeral. The team said the two will meet to discuss McClain’s role moving forward once Allen returns.
There is a chance McClain could be shelved for the final three games and be cut after the season.
Chekwa will likely be given a chance to show the 3-10 Raiders he can be part of the future. He was a fourth-round draft pick last year and he was cut by the team and put on the practice squad prior to this season. The Raiders also re-signed safety Akwasi Owusu-Ansah to the practice squad.
