Andy Reid: Alex Smith is our starter

By Bill Williamson

When the Kansas City Chiefs signed New Orleans backup Chase Daniel on Tuesday, there were some rumblings around the league that the team might be interested in having him push Alex Smith for the starting quarterback job.

Forget that notion. At a press conference to introduce Smith, acquired in a deal with the 49ers, new Kansas City coach Andy Reid said Smith is the starter, Daniel is the backup and there is no competition.

I buy it. Smith is a proven starter. Daniel is not. The Chiefs gave up a second-rounder this year and a conditional third that could become a second next year to get Smith.

He is the starter.

Of course, if Smith falls on his face, Daniel will wind up in the mix. But that goes for every starter.

Reid raved about Smith on Wednesday. He said he checked more than once on Smith’s availability in a trade when he was head coach of the Eagles. Smith is expected to be a nice fit for Reid’s West Coast offense.

The feeling is mutual. Smith said he was fired up for the trade to happen because he wants to play for Reid. And he will -- as the Chiefs’ starting quarterback.
