Broncos expect extra Charge this season

By Bill Williamson

Much has been made of the Denver Broncos' penchant for adding former San Diego Chargers this offseason.

The AFC West champions have signed guard Louis Vasquez, linebacker Shaun Phillips and defensive back Quentin Jammer all from San Diego. However, there is yet another former San Diego player who is expected to have a key role for the Broncos in 2013.

Denver signed fullback Jacob Hester -- a former second-round pick of the Chargers who was cut last year -- last season. He played a big role down the stretch. The team expects Hester, a versatile running back who is also a special teams ace, to fill many roles this season.

“It’s hard to find guys like that,” Denver offensive coordinator Adam Gase said of Hester. “To be able to play halfback, fullback -- we throw him on the wing every once in a while, we can spread him out. His versatility is huge for us because we can do some things. It should help in our short yardage, goal line, four-minute packages. It’s been a big point of emphasis this offseason to figure out how we get him on the field and use him a little more, whether he’s playing tailback, fullback, an F-tight end and H-back. We’re going to try to use him as many ways as possible.”

Just call the 2013 Broncos "Bolts East."
