Franklin poised for short stint vs. 49ers

By Jeff Legwold

The concerns the Denver Broncos have about their battered offensive line will be evident tonight in San Francisco, by exactly who lines up there when quarterback Peyton Manning is in the game.

Most specifically if right tackle Orlando Franklin, who has a sore hip, makes a cameo. With a backup already working at left tackle in Chris Clark while Ryan Clady works his way back from offseason shoulder surgery, the Broncos will be inclined to play Franklin if he gets the thumbs-up from the team's medical staff.

The Broncos considered sitting Franklin in this preseason opener given he left practice Monday with a hip injury and did not participate in Tuesday's full practice. He did take part in a walk-through Tuesday night. But if Franklin can move without difficulty through warm-ups, he should make a brief appearance.

Broncos center Manny Ramirez is also poised to start in his first NFL game at center against the 49ers.

Manning is slated to play a quarter at most, but if the Broncos are efficient in their first possession of the game, he could exit sooner than that and Franklin could go out with him.

Broncos coach John Fox has repeatedly said his goal is to "have 53 players healthy and ready for the opener."
