Ryan Mathews misses practice again

By Eric D. Williams

SAN DIEGO – For a second straight day, San Diego Chargers running back Ryan Mathews did not practice due to an ankle injury suffered last week against Oakland.

But coach Mike McCoy has maintained that the expectation is for Mathews to take the field and play in the team’s final game of the season against Kansas City.

"He’s doing good," McCoy said when asked about Mathews' injury status on Thursday. Chargers offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt echoed McCoy's sentiments: "We'll see how it goes. From what I’ve seen and in talking to him, he’s getting better."

Asked about the possible absence of Mathews on Sunday and how it might affect San Diego’s offense, Whisenhunt had a simple answer – next man up.

"Ryan’s playing well for us," Whisenhunt said. "I don’t look at it that way. I just look at it as we’re going to have somebody step up. That’s what we’ve done at all different positions during the year."

Along with Mathews, receiver Eddie Royal (toe) did not practice for a second straight day. Cornerback Shareece Wright (foot) returned to practice as a limited participant. Guard Jeromey Clary (hand) was a limited participant for a second straight day.

Linebacker Thomas Keiser (elbow) and defensive lineman Sean Lissemore (shoulder) were full participants.
