Denver was having red zone trouble all day. Really, it has been a long-term issue for the Broncos.
Yet, Josh McDaniels pushed the envelope. Perhaps this would be the time his team showed life in the red zone.
Perhaps next time.
It was fourth-and-3 at the 12-yard line with more than nine minutes remaining against visiting Indianapolis, which was leading 20-13. Without much hesitation, McDaniels decided to go for it instead of kicking a field goal, which would have made it a four-point game.
But a Kyle Orton pass intended for receiver Brandon Lloyd wasn’t close. The Colts took over and then scored the game’s final points in a 27-13 win. McDaniels said afterward he never really considered kicking the field goal and he’d probably do the same thing in the future.
It wasn’t an awful call, but it failed and it cost Denver the game. Because there were more than nine minutes to go and the team needed 3 yards for a first down, it is understandable why McDaniels’ call is being questioned.
