The Oakland Raiders are going to receive a nice reprieve courtesy of coach Tom Cable at some point during training camp.
Cable will splurge for a team dinner and night of bowling because the Los Angeles Lakers beat the Boston Celtics in the NBA Finals. The Lakers clinched the series victory in Game 7 on Thursday night.
In May, Oakland star left cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha approached Cable about a bet if the Lakers and Celtics met in the Finals. Asomugha, who grew up in Los Angeles, is a longtime Lakers fan. Cable is a dedicated Celtics fan.
“The bet was my idea but what we wagered was Coach Cable’s idea,” Asomugha explained in an email interview Friday. “I knew how much he was a die-hard Celtics [fan] and he knows how much I was a die-hard Lakers fan. Once the playoffs started I proposed that if Lakers ended up playing the Celtics during the finals we needed to make it interesting. And he named the bet. The loser takes the entire team out to dinner and bowling during camp. Robert Gallery was our witness.”
Asomugha went to all four of the Finals games in Los Angeles. He wrote that he and Cable have corresponded via text on Friday.
“He was a really good sport about it and we had a couple of laughs,” Asomugha wrote.
Asomugha wrote his teammates are fired up about the payoff.
“Everyone that I’ve spoken to is excited,” Asomugha wrote. “It will be a good break from the hard work of training camp.”
I really like this idea. One of Cable’s strong points as a coach is his relationship with his players. He received a lot of support from the team earlier this offseason when the Raiders were deciding whether to bring him back.
The dinner and bowling night will build team unity and build chemistry during the dog days of camp. Sure, Cable is going to have to break out his wallet, but the payoff will be well worth the price tag.
