SAN DIEGO -- The San Diego Chargers will have to play the rest of the game without standout cornerback Quentin Jammer. He has a hamstring injury. The team announced he will not return.
That has to be worrisome for San Diego, which is dealing with a lot of injuries. When it is determined so soon after the injury that a player won’t return, it is an indication that the injury could be serious. Dante Hughes and Marcus Gilchrist will play more for the Chargers.
Meanwhile, the Chargers responded to the Chiefs’ touchdown with a nifty, seven-play, 80-yard drive culminated by a short touchdown run by Ryan Mathews. San Diego leads 17-7 midway through the third quarter.
UPDATE: San Diego defensive end Jacques Cesaire went to the locker room with a knee injury. He is questionable to return. He is playing for Luis Castillo, who is out for several weeks with a broken leg.
UPDATE: The post-game expectation is that Jammer should be able to play next week.

As expected, the San Diego Chargers signed fullback/linebacker Kion Wilson on Saturday. He is expected to be on the 45-man roster Sunday against Arizona.
Wilson will help on special teams and provide depth at linebacker, where the Chargers will play without Larry English (foot) and likely without Shawne Merriman (calf). Wilson is an undrafted rookie from South Florida.
Cornerback Dante Hughes was released to make room for Wilson. Hughes was cut last Saturday and brought back during the week.

The San Diego Chargers’ staggering string of bad fortune at long snapper has continued.
After having one long snapper since 1994, San Diego is now on its fourth snapper of the season. Amazing.
Long snapper Ryan Neill, who snapped in the second and third games, is now out for the year with a knee injury. So, San Diego has now turned to veteran Ethan Albright. He is in his 16th NFL season. He snapped in every game through 1996-2009. He was last with Washington.
Let’s see if Albright can bring back stability to the position in San Diego. The craziness began when David Binn, the longest tenured Charger ever, was lost for the season in an opening-season loss at Kansas City. The team then signed veteran James Dearth. He was lost for the season when he was hurt in practice before playing a game for the Chargers.
The Chargers made some other moves Tuesday. San Diego signed safety Quinton Teal and brought back Dante Hughes, who was cut Saturday. Running back Curtis Brinkley was cut. He will likely go back to the practice squad. He was signed to the 53-man roster Saturday as insurance at running back. His release probably means rookie starter Ryan Mathews will be back against Arizona. Mathews has missed the past six quarters with an ankle injury. There were indications Monday that Mathews would play this week.
The team also put linebacker James Holt on the injured reserve with a shoulder injury.

The San Diego Chargers officially announced that left tackle Marcus McNeill ended his holdout and signed his tender. McNeill will be eligible to play Oct.17 at St. Louis.
“We’re all very happy that Marcus has decided to sign his tender and go back to work,” San Diego general manager A.J. Smith said in a statement. “He has missed some time on the job, but we will be patient, get him up to speed and Coach (Norv Turner) will decide how quickly he gets on the field.”
With rookie tailback Ryan Mathews likely out Sunday with an ankle injury, the Chargers added depth to the position by promoting running back Curtis Brinkley from the practice squad. Cornerback Dante Hughes was cut to make room for Brinkley.
An emotional Josh McDaniels said Kenny McKinley was "tough to yell at" during a memorial for McKinley on Friday. McKinley died of an apparent suicide Monday. McKinley was 23. The second-year receiver was on the injured reserve.
Chiefs rookie safety Kendrick Lewis was fined $5,000 for a helmet-to-helmet hit in a Week 2 win at Cleveland.

According to ESPN’s Stats and Information, the AFC West has been very busy using the shotgun formation. Kansas City has used the shotgun 198 times, which is the fourth most in the NFL. Denver is fifth with 184. The Chargers are averaging 8.3 yards per play using the shotgun.
An NFL spokesman said Tuesday that the league has not made any decision on whether to discipline Oakland coach Tom Cable regarding the assault allegations made by Oakland defensive assistant Randy Hanson. Authorities have declined to pursue charges against Cable. Any NFL discipline would likely be minor.
Kansas City signed receiver/returner Quentin Lawrence to the practice squad. Kansas City cut the sixth-round pick Saturday.
Tennessee claimed punter Brett Kern off waivers from Denver. He was cut Monday as Denver signed veteran Mitch Berger.

KANSAS CITY -- Both the Chargers and the Chiefs made a roster move Saturday as they prepare for Sunday’s game.
The Chiefs cut sixth-round draft pick Quinten Lawrence. They promoted receiver Lance Long from the practice squad. Lawrence is a speedster but he played just two games and had one run for 16 yards. Kansas City could put him on the practice squad if he clears waivers.
The Chargers cut cornerback Dante Hughes. He was signed Tuesday. San Diego promoted cornerback Simeon Castille from the practice squad to replace Hughes.
Meanwhile, former San Diego safety Clinton Hart worked out for the Browns. San Diego surprisingly cut the starter last week.

The San Diego Chargers placed backup linebacker and special teams ace Antwan Applewhite on the injured reserve Tuesday. He has been out with a hamstring injury since the season opener at Oakland.
The Chargers signed cornerback Dante Hughes to replace Applewhite. Hughes was a third-round pick of the Colts in 2007. The Colts cut him in September. The Chargers have been interested in upgrading their secondary for weeks. They did not make a trade by the Tuesday deadline, even though the team was interested in making a move.
