While big names such as Mike Shanahan and Bill Cowher appear to be unlikely matches for the Chiefs, here is a look at some of the coaching candidates available and how they'd potentially fit in with Kansas City.

Kirk Ferentz

Iowa, head coach

The skinny: Ferentz's name has been mentioned for other NFL jobs and many league observers think he'll be a strong NFL coach. Still, others have doubts Ferentz wants to leave the Hawkeyes. He has ties with new Chiefs' general manager Scott Pioli.

Leslie Frazier

Minnesota Vikings, defensive coordinator

The skinny: He has had several interviews and he was a runner-up in Denver. If the Chiefs want to stick with a defensive-minded coach, Frazier could be a strong candidate. Kansas City has more issues on defense than offense, so it could be tempting.

Chan Gailey

Kansas City Chiefs, offensive coordinator

Skinny: The current Chiefs' assistant has head coaching experience but his work in Kansas City was questioned by many. It would be somewhat of an upset if Pioli were to pick someone from Herm Edwards' staff.

Jason Garrett

Dallas Cowboys, offensive coordinator

The skinny: Garrett was very hot last year and he had some interviews this year. He could get a look, especially if Todd Haley doesn't pan out.

Todd Haley

Arizona Cardinals, offensive coordinator

The skinny: Many consider Haley, the current coaching candidate flavor of the day, to be a favorite for the job. He has done an excellent job with Cardinals' offense. Plus, he has ties to Pioli.
