AFC West: Jeb Putzier

The Denver Broncos cut four players Tuesday to get down to the NFL-mandated maximum of 75 players.

There was a mild surprise. The team cut center Blake Schlueter, a seventh-round pick. The Texas Christian product wasn’t, by any means, considered a lock to make the team, but you would think a draft choice would make it past the round of 75 and, at least, compete for a spot on the practice squad.

The other name of note was veteran tight end Jeb Putzier. He finished last season with the Broncos and was re-signed by the new regime this offseason. The other players cut were punter Britton Colquitt and receiver C.J. Jones.

The agent for Denver center Casey Wiegmann said Wiegmann will report to the team's offseason workout program Monday.

"Casey will be there and is looking forward to working with Josh McDaniels," Wiegmann's agent Joe Linta said. "Casey is looking forward to showing the Broncos he is in great shape and ready for a couple of more seasons of excellent play."

The Broncos and Wiegmann have talked about a contract extension. He has one season remaining on his contract. Wiegmann has in the past worked out on his own but his participation in Denver's program is looked at as a good faith move on his part. The two sides will likely discuss a contract extension in the summer.

Meanwhile, Linta confirmed another client, tight end Jeb Putzier, has agreed to a new contract with Denver. He signed with Denver late last season. He will be a backup.

The Broncos brought back tight end Jeb Putzier on Wednesday. Putzier was a sixth-round draft choice of Denver's in 2002. He was cut after the 2005 season in a salary-cap move. Putzier had 96 catches in 17 starts for Denver.

He is known as a soft-handed receiver who will backup pass-catching tight end Tony Scheffler, who has battled injury issues the past two seasons. With Denver's running game strapped by injuries, the team will likely pass more and the team will need more receivers.

To make room for Putzier, Denver waived Herana-Daze Jones. The safety was signed last week.

Denver also signed running back Steve Baylark to the practice squad. The former University of Massachusetts standout was on Arizona's practice squad last season. He was cut by the Cardinals at the end of the preseason. Denver has a very thin running back crew and Baylark will be closely looked at during practices.
