The slow process that has been the Kansas City Chiefs offseason took another step Friday evening when the team announced that five members of Herm Edwards' staff have been fired. Edwards was fired Jan. 23 by new Kansas City general manager Scott Pioli who was hired Jan. 13.
The coaches fired Friday were Jon Embree (tight ends), Michael Ketchum (defensive assistant/assistant linebackers), Curtis Modkins (running backs), Kevin Patullo (offensive assistant/quality control) and Eric Price (wide receivers). Several members of Edwards have previously taken other jobs. The coaches who were fired Friday were in the office until earlier Friday afternoon.
Chan Gailey, who was Edwards' offensive coordinator, is expected to be retained in some capacity. On the team's Web site, his name remains as offensive coordinator. Gailey has been said to be a favorite of several people in the Chiefs' building.
The team is expected to hire a defensive coordinator with Miami assistant Todd Bowles as a possibility. Former New Orleans defensive coordinator Gary Gibbs is expected to join the staff, perhaps as defensive coordinator.
The Chiefs have yet to announce any key additions to the new staff of coach Todd Haley. He took over Feb. 6. The NFL combine starts in less than week thus the Chiefs are expected to complete their staff soon.
