AFC West: VIncnet Brown

Weekend mail call:

Johnny from Santa Rosa, Calif., wants to know if the Chargers’ secondary will be a weakness.

Bill Williamson: Eric Weddle is a premier safety and free-agent addition Derek Cox is an underrated cornerback. They are halfway there. But otherwise, San Diego is young in the secondary and it needs players like Shareece Wright and Marcus Gilchrist to take the next step. The Chargers are confident these players will do well, but there are concerns, especially if injuries occur.

Derek from Colorado Springs wants to know if I think the Broncos will sign a pass-rusher because of Von Miller's potential four-game suspension.

BW: The Broncos are taking a wait-and-see approach with the suspension. Miller’s appeal will be held in mid-August. The team will have resolution before its Sept. 5 regular-season opener against Baltimore. If the suspension sticks, I think Denver may browse for some help, but there isn’t much out there. Ultimately, I think the Broncos will have to grin-and-bear this situation and hope its current supporting cast can produce while Miller is out.

Bryce Parker from Fayetteville, Ark., wants to know if we should be worried about how injury prone the Chargers’ receiving group is.

BW: You are right, there are some players in this group that have dealt with injuries. Three of San Diego’s top receivers are Vincent Brown, Danario Alexander and rookie Keenan Allen. All have dealt with injuries. Brown missed all of last season with a broken ankle. But the Chargers believe they will get good production out of this group as a whole and they hope the injury bug stays away from the unit.

Chat Wrap: Oakland CB plan

June, 15, 2012
The following are some highlights from our AFC West chat, which was held earlier Friday:

Chad from Denver: Hey Bill, I am a huge Air Force fan, and I would love to see former DT/DE Ben Garland make the Broncos squad and have a career similar to Chad Hennings. What do you think his chances are?

Bill Williamson: There are a lot people who love Garland. He is a serious worker and I think he has a chance at the 53-man roster.

Kansas City

Ryan from Lebanon, Mo.: If you had to make a guess as to if or when Dwayne Bowe gets a contract or signs his tender when do you think it will happen or do you think he will hold out like Vincent Jackson did last year ?

Bill Williamson: Maybe I'm wrong on this one, but I don't see a long holdout happening.

Mark from Toronto: What do you think the chances are that Van Dyke or Chewka could beat out Spencer (or I guess Bartell) for a starting CB gig?

BW: Sure, I think that's what the team would like to see. Get one of those young guys out there. They are the future. Bartell and Spencer are quick fixes. Both are 30.

San Diego

Matt Johnson from Flagstaff, Ariz.: Which Charger receiver do you think will have the most catches next season? I'm hearing a lot of good things about Eddie Royal this year.

BW: Don't discount Vincent Brown. I could see him really becoming a big part of the offense.
