AFC West: William Joseph
Reports: Denver cuts veteran defenders
Mike Reiss of ESPNBoston.com is reporting that Denver is cutting defensive lineman Jarvis Green and linebacker Darrell Reid. Green was a free-agent pickup this offseason and Reid was brought in as a free agent last year. Green’s release would be a surprise since he was signed to be a starter this year on Denver’s new-look defensive line. However, he didn’t crack the starting lineup this summer. Perhaps Denver decided to go with youth over a veteran backup. Reid is a special-teamer who has been injured.
ESPN's Adam Schefter is reporting San Diego has cut receiver Josh Reed. That is not a shock. He was signed as insurance earlier this summer, but he never established himself. His fate was sealed when San Diego traded for Patrick Crayton on Friday.
NFL.com is reporting Denver is shopping second-year cornerback Alphonso Smith. The report says Denver wants a fifth-round pick for Smith. In the 2009 draft, Denver traded its 2010 first-round pick (No. 14) to trade up and take Smith at No. 37. He has been a major disappointment. It will be interesting to see if Denver cuts Smith if a trade isn’t worked out.
Schefter reports Washington is cutting Willie Parker. Denver badly needs running backs, but I’m not sure Parker is the answer.
Schefter reports defensive lineman William Joseph is among Oakland’s cuts. He was been on and off Oakland’s roster last year.
Tampa Bay has cut receiver Michael Clayton. Add his name to the list of potential receivers who could attract interest from the AFC West. Each team in the division could use receiver depth.
• The Chiefs want their renovated new stadium to be in the national spotlight.
• Denver coach Josh McDaniels backs up what has been thought for a week -- Kyle Orton, and not Brady Quinn, heads into the 2010 season as the Broncos’ starting quarterback.
• The Raiders brought backbackup defensive tackle William Joseph.
AFC West notes: Jack Williams claimed
DENVER -- Let’s catch up on some division notes before Monday night’s game:
Cornerback Jack Williams was awarded to Detroit on waivers. Denver cut the second-year player Saturday to make room for veteran cornerback Ty Law. Williams played in every game this season. Williams was popular on the waiver wire. Cleveland, Indianapolis and Philadelphia all put a claim in for him. Detroit was awarded him based on record.
Oakland signed defensive lineman William Joseph and cut guard Paul McQuistan.
Receiver Bobby Engram cleared waivers after being cut by Kansas City.
The Chargers have announced that Sunday’s game against Philadelphia has been sold out.
Kansas City coach Todd Haley addressed the release of running back Larry Johnson in a video.
The Raiders are entering the second half of the season in good health.
Kansas City activated running back Kolby Smith off the physically unable to perform list as expected. Smith should get some action Sunday against Jacksonville as he backs up Jamaal Charles. Charles is starting due to a one-game suspension being served by Larry Johnson.
Should Charles and/or Smith play well against Jacksonville, Johnson’s role with the team could lessen.
To make room for Smith, Kansas City waived veteran receiver Bobby Engram. Engram was signed in the offseason to be a veteran leader, but he had little impact. Engram, 36, played in five games and had just five catches this season.
- Ty Law may play Monday against Pittsburgh, 48 hours after signing with Denver.
- Denver defensive lineman Ryan McBean was ruled out of the Pittsburgh game with a knee injury. LeKevin Smith will start in his place.
- Oakland had a visit with defensive lineman William Joseph on Friday. Joseph has bounced on and off the Raiders’ roster this year.
Plenty of roster moves in AFC West

There’s been some roster juggling in the AFC West on Monday.
ESPN’s Chris Mortensen is reporting the Chiefs have signed receiver Bobby Wade.
Wade played for Kansas City coach Todd Haley in Chicago and the Chiefs have a big need for receivers. Wade was a surprise cut in Minnesota last week. Wade is an experienced player, who should be able to help the Chiefs right away.
Meanwhile, the Chargers cut fourth-round pick Gartrell Johnson to make room for defensive end Andre Coleman.
The Chargers liked Johnson, a big downhill runner. But he was the team’s fourth tailback. The Chargers will likely put Johnson on the practice squad if he slips through waivers Tuesday. Coleman was on San Diego’s practice squad the past two years. He gives the Chargers some depth Monday night. They are banged up at defensive end with starter Jacques Cesaire not expected to play against Oakland on Monday night.
Oakland cut defensive tackle William Joseph for the second time in a week to make room for Richard Seymour, who is expected to play extensively Monday night.
Raiders get roster exemption for Seymour
The Richard Seymour saga took another incremental turn Friday when the NFL gave the Oakland Raiders a contract exemption.
Seymour was traded from New England to Oakland on Sunday. However, Seymour has not reported to the Raiders. And, Oakland has now re-signed defensive tackle William Joseph who was cut when Oakland acquired Seymour, a star defensive lineman.
Meanwhile, an NFL spokesman said that trades can only be voided if a player fails a physical with his new club if it is part of the trade agreement. The way the Patriots have washed their hands of the situation may suggest that there is no such agreement.
The Boston Herald reports Seymour has received a letter from the Raiders, indicating he has five days to report to the team or risk being suspended for the season. Oakland surrendered a first-round pick in 2011 for Seymour.
Several transactions in the AFC West

There were several transactions involving the AFC West on Sunday.
Kansas City made a big switch at tackle. It cut Barry Richardson and claimed tackle Ryan O’Callaghan. He comes from New England.
He started seven games for the Patriots in his career and new Kansas City general manager Scott Pioli was an executive with the Patriots during O’Callaghan’s New England tenure.
O'Callaghan has a chance to start with the Chiefs. In addition to Richardson, the Chiefs cut former starter Damion McIntosh on Friday.
Also in the AFC West:
- Two players Denver cut were claimed. Linebacker/defensive end Tim Crowder was claimed by Tampa Bay and guard Kory Lichtensteiger was claimed by Minnesota.
- To make room for Richard Seymour, the Raiders cut defensive tackle William Joseph.

The Raiders have quietly done some business this offseason and have stayed true to their plan of keeping their own.
The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that return man Justin Miller and defensive tackle William Joseph have re-signed with the club and are at the team's facility today for the start of the team's offseason workout program.
The moves to keep Miller and Joseph continue Oakland's routine of re-signing its own players this offseason. The team has been reluctant to bring in outside help this season but has been aggressively keeping its own players.
Retaining Miller was a good move by Oakland. He was an explosive returner after Oakland claimed him off waivers in November. Miller and Johnnie Lee Higgins give Oakland a terrific pair of return men.

Here are some evening AFC West tidbits:
Wide receiver Chad Jackson is departing Oakland tonight after visiting with the Raiders, his agent David Canter said. Canter said Jackson is off to Cincinnati for a Wednesday visit.
The former Florida star was released by New England on Sunday. Canter said Oakland had interest in signing Jackson at a later date. But Jackson wants to explore other opportunities in the meantime with hopes of being in a uniform for this weekend's games.
Terry Bolar, the agent for veteran right tackle Willie Anderson, said his client will visit San Diego after stops in Baltimore and Tampa Bay. Bolar said there is no set date for Anderson, who was cut by Cincinnati this weekend, to visit the Chargers.
The Raiders cut defensive lineman William Joseph to make room for receiver Ashley Lelie, who agreed terms Monday.
Here are New England coach Bill Belichick's thoughts on the Chiefs.
