TEMPE, Ariz. -- During the last week of the preseason, Arizona coach Bruce Arians decided to sign a kicker to challenge incumbent starter Jay Feely.

Whatever the reason for the move, Feely stood up to the challenge.

Feely missed one of his two attempts in Week 1 against the St. Louis Rams and hasn’t missed since, hitting his last 13.

“Competition does a lot of things,” Arians said. “I had a lot of confidence in him anyway but he handled that challenge and has handled everything else well the rest of the way.”

Arians has been even more impressed with Feely’s kickoffs. Of Feely’s 39 kickoffs this season, 22 have been touchbacks. Opponents have returned just 18 kicks and averaged 20 yards per return.

“[He’s] just kicking extremely well, field goals and kickoffs,” Arians said. “Kickoffs have been out of sight. I can’t say enough that Jay answered the ball and I’m looking forward to him continuing that.”
