5 positions still up for grabs: RT

6/1/2014

Every day this week, I will take a deeper look into one of five starting positions that is up for grabs come training camp. I’ll dissect why it’s available, who’s in the lead to take it over, their competition and give an overall outlook.

These are the five more important positions that don’t have a clearly defined starter.

Position: RT

Last year’s starter: Eric Winston

Why it’s up for grabs: The Cardinals didn’t re-sign Winston, who still remains a free agent, despite starting all 16 games last season.

Leader in the clubhouse: Bradley Sowell

Top competition: Bobby Massie

Outlook: While the competition is between Sowell and Massie in June, there’s a good chance it could include a third option come training camp. Head coach Bruce Arians doesn’t seem pleased enough with either player to make them the clear-cut starter. Sowell, last year’s starter at left tackle, admitted last week that he’s made too many mistakes, an issue that Arians won’t stand for. Playing under Arians in Indianapolis, Sowell saw time at right tackle. Massie, who started at right tackle all of 2012, has improved his flexibility and strength but still struggles to pick up the playbook. He also has been making too many mistakes to get a shot at being the starter.
