Every day this week, I will take a deeper look into one of five starting positions that is up for grabs come training camp. I’ll dissect why it’s available, who’s in the lead to take it over, their competition and give an overall outlook.

These are the five more important positions that don’t have a clearly defined starter.

Position: RG

Last year’s starter: Paul Fanaika

Why it's up for grabs: The Cardinals thought Fanaika held his own but they drafted Earl Watford for a reason and that was to be a guard on this team in the future.

Leader in the clubhouse: Earl Watford

Top competition: Fanaika

Outlook: Faniaka was an adequate fill-in last season after Jonathan Cooper went down with broken leg in the third preseason game. That put in motion a series of moves that led him to getting a job after missing all of 2012 -- Cooper was out; Daryn Colledge, who moved from left guard to right guard after Cooper was drafted, moved back to right guard; Fanaika took over at right guard. He has a leg up because he’s the incumbent starter and has 16 games worth of experience over Watford. But Watford is a physical specimen and the coaching staff really believes in what he can do and want to give him a chance this season.
