Every day this week, I will take a deeper look into one of five starting positions that is up for grabs come training camp. I’ll dissect why it’s available, who’s in the lead to take it over, their competition and give an overall outlook.
These are the five more important positions that don’t have a clearly defined starter.
Last year’s starter: Matt Shaughnessy
Why it's up for grabs: Sam Acho, who Shaughnessy replaced three weeks into last season, has returned from a broken leg.
Leader in the clubhouse: Shaughnessy
Top competition: Acho
Outlook: Shaughnessy had an impressive season last year and his size made it difficult for offensive linemen to combat, which led to Arizona re-signing him in the offseason. But with Acho, who the Cardinals lost in Week 3 last season to a broken leg, returning healthy, Shaughnessy will have to fend off his advances throughout OTAs and training camp. And with John Abraham not practicing, Acho is getting more field time to show coaches what he’s capable of now that he’s healthy again. Abraham is a projected starter on one side, but if Acho can impress enough, he can make a serious run at Shaughnessy’s spot.
