FTP: Sopoaga taking Cards' job day-by-day

8/21/2014

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- In less than two hours Wednesday, defensive tackle Isaac Sopoaga signed a contract, put his pads on and went out to practice with his new team, the Arizona Cardinals.

And he still had time to make a few plays in practice.

"I pick it up one day at a time," Sopoaga said. "There’s guys that’s been here that I trust. They’ve been working hard from the beginning of preseason and we are all professionals even though they’re young, they’re pros.”

Sopoaga showed his personality meeting with the media for the first time as a Cardinal. He first tried to get out of speaking to the cameras, claiming his English wasn’t very good. Then he stood for a second with his back to the cameras. Then he turned to face to the side, saying he would stand the same way the Cardinals' logo was facing. Then he faced the hoard of cameras and microphones.

At one point, Sopoaga even yelled "Go Cards."

He said he was at home in San Jose, California, with his family when the Cardinals invited him to Glendale to try out. Sopoaga, entering his 10th season, was signed to a one-year deal to help with the depth on the defensive line in the wake of Darnell Dockett’s season-ending ACL injury.

When asked how he can help the Cardinals, Sopoaga humbly said by respecting his teammates, coaches, people around the Cardinals' facility as well as the playbook.

"I want to be just myself, humble and try to help the guys on the team and always for our team to win," he said.
