Flush the Pocket: Cards defying magazine
By Josh Weinfuss
Flush the Pocket will be your daily morning dose of theArizona Cardinals. It’ll recap the top story line from the previous day and give you a look at what everyone is saying locally and nationally.
TEMPE, Ariz. -- I was cleaning out some old magazines over the bye weekend and came across ESPN The Magazine’s NFL preview issue.
Naturally, I began skimming it and then a curiosity swept over me: I needed to see how the Cardinals are faring compared to The Mag’s predictions. So I flipped the pages furiously until I found the NFC West. I already knew who the first two teams would be, but I was curious to refresh my memory as to the Cards prediction.
Sure enough, The Mag predicted them to finish fourth in the four-team West. Not a surprise after the type of season they had in 2012. But then a few things stood out. The Mag predicted the Cardinals offense to be ranked 22nd in the league and the defense 18th. At the halfway mark, the offense is actually ranked 30th and the defense 13th.
But what I found most interesting was The Mag’s schedule predictor. It had the Cardinals going 3-13 this season. They are already 4-4 through their first eight games.
Here’s a breakdown of The Mag’s predictions per game, and how the Cardinals have fared through the first eight:
As you can see, the Cardinals already won two more games in the first half than The Mag predicted, but The Mag came eerily close to matching a few scores and even hit the Atlanta score on the mark, but it had the Falcons winning.
We’ll check back at the end of the season to see how the Cardinals matched up against The Mag’s last eight predictions.
