FTP: Arians knows about interim role

By Josh Weinfuss

Flush the Pocket will be your daily morning dose of the Arizona Cardinals. It’ll recap the top storyline from the previous day and give you a look at what everyone is saying locally and nationally.

TEMPE, Ariz. – Arizona Cardinals coach Bruce Arians was a popular guy this week.

With the news that Denver’s John Fox and Houston’s Gary Kubiak would be missing their respective games Sunday and that their roles would be filled on an interim basis, a lot of people – media and coaches, alike – reached out to Arians for comments and advice.

Why? Because Arians filled in for Indianapolis coach Chuck Pagano last season for 12 games while Pagano was treated for leukemia. He set a new bar for interim coaches, and was named coach of the year.

“It’s a keep-the-seat-warm type of thing, which is a good feeling for an assistant because you know your guy is coming back,” Arians said. “The biggest thing I learned during that was just do my job, which was the offensive coordinator, and keep the seat warm for Chuck until he got back.”

On Twitter on Monday, reports came out of Denver that interim Broncos coach Jack Del Rio wanted to reach out to Arians to pick his brain on being an interim.

My ESPN.com colleague Tania Ganguli, who covers the Texans, wrote about Arians after his conference call with Houston media. Here’s her story.
