Patrick Peterson awaiting Cards' move

By Josh Weinfuss

TEMPE, Ariz. -- Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson has talked about his contract, just not with the Arizona Cardinals, he said.

Peterson and his new agent, Joel Segal, have discussed his future and what it’ll cost to keep him a Cardinal. They’re now waiting for the Cardinals to make the first move, Peterson said

“As soon as the GM [Steve Keim] and [director of football administration] Mike Disner , and all those guys want to start talking, we’re definitely wide open for it,” Peterson said.

The three-time Pro Bowl cornerback has a year left on his rookie contract and the Cardinals can exercise a club option for 2015. He’s slated to make $2.88 million next season but that can change if he signs a new, long-term deal. But if his camp and the Cardinals can’t agree on a new contract by the end of 2015, Arizona could franchise him twice. If that happens, Arizona could prolong making Peterson the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL until 2018.

That won’t sit well with Peterson, and most likely won’t happen. But then again, nothing’s guaranteed in this league.
