The Atlanta Falcons filled their open roster spot and addressed depth at wide receiver by promoting undrafted rookie Darius Johnson from the practice squad on Saturday.
The move coincides with the team’s release of safety Shann Schillinger on Friday. Johnson replaces Schillinger on the 53-man roster.
The Falcons will be without their top two receivers Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with Julio Jones out for the season following foot surgery and Roddy White out against the Bucs with hamstring and ankle injuries. White will miss the first game of his NFL career, bringing his streak of 133 consecutive games to an end.
With Jones and White out of the lineup, Harry Douglas and Drew Davis will move into the starting lineup at receiver, according to the team’s depth chart. It all depends on what formation the Falcons use to start the game.
As for Johnson, the rookie from SMU led the Falcons with 13 catches for 158 yards and a touchdown during the preseason.
