Ravens 2014 player rankings: No. 7

July, 10, 2014
ESPN.com polled 18 Baltimore media members for their top 20 players on the 2014 Baltimore Ravens roster. The countdown will run through the middle of July, just before the start of training camp. You can click here for an introduction on how the blog put together the rankings.

Let's continue the countdown ...

Position: Wide receiver

Total points: 222. First-place votes: None.

Highest ranking: No. 2. Lowest ranking: Not ranked.

What you need to know: Smith's 1,128 yards receiving last season fell 74 yards short of setting a Ravens single-season record. He looked like he was on his way to establishing himself as a No. 1 receiver in this league through the first five games of 2013, ranking first in the AFC and third in the NFL with 556 yards receiving. But he disappeared in the second half of the season. In his final eight games, Smith produced 499 yards receiving, which ranked 29th in the league over that span. The Ravens are looking to extend the contract of Smith, who is entering the final year of his rookie deal.

Where Torrey Smith should be ranked: This is exactly where I had Smith ranked on my list. He isn't consistent enough to be a No. 1 wide receiver in the NFL just yet, but he is one of the most explosive playmakers in the league. Smith is definitely trending upward, as his catches and receiving yards have increased in each of his three NFL seasons.

File this away: Smith's 25 receptions over 25 yards is tied for the fifth-most in the NFL since 2012. His 17.2 yards per catch is the fifth-best in the league over the past three seasons.

What the Ravens are saying about Torrey Smith: “If something is going wrong or if I need help with something, I go to Torrey before I go to anybody. He's our leader." -- Ravens wide receiver Marlon Brown
