OWINGS MILLS, Md. -- Running back Bernard Pierce and safety Matt Elam were both absent during the media viewing portion of Monday's practice.

Pierce was not out on the field a day after saying he was "fine." He suffered a head injury in the first quarter of Saturday's preseason game.

The bigger surprise was the absence of Elam, the starting strong safety. Elam played 36 snaps in Saturday's preseason game and made two tackles.

Without Elam, Jeromy Miles or Brynden Trawick would likely work with the first-team defense Monday. Ravens coach John Harbaugh will field questions about injuries after practice.

The Ravens did welcome back tight end Owen Daniels, who had missed the past two games with fatigued legs. He was participating in all of the position drills.

Cornerback Jimmy Smith wasn't suited up for practice, but he did run sprints during position drills. He bruised his chest in Aug. 16 preseason game at Dallas.
