The Baltimore Ravens will likely be without their top backup running back until the start of training camp.
Bernard Pierce underwent surgery on his right shoulder to repair his rotator cuff on Wednesday, his agent told The Baltimore Sun. The recovery time is four to five months, which will probably force him to miss all of the spring workouts.
Pierce, a third-round pick in 2012, struggled mightily last season and wasn't decisive in hitting the line. He had 44 more carries than his rookie season but finished with 96 fewer yards. His yards per carry average dropped from 4.9 in 2012 to 2.9 in 2013.
It'll be interesting to see if the Ravens add a running back in free agency or the draft because Pierce has had trouble staying healthy in his first two seasons.

Brendon Ayanbadejo, who has a habit of speaking out on topics that draw attention, told FoxSports.com that there was marijuana use by teammates leading up to the Super Bowl but he wouldn't specify whether it was the 2006 Chicago Bears or the 2012 Ravens. "I just remember getting off the elevator one night … and all of the sudden I just got hit over the head with fumes of marijuana on the entire floor of the hotel that the team was staying on," Ayanbadejo said. "I could just imagine there were a few young guys just toking it up in more than one room."
Why didn't Gary Kubiak end up as the Cleveland Browns' offensive coordinator? According to the NFL Network (via ESPN.com's Tania Ganguli), the Browns weren't going to give Kubiak the power to bring some of his own coaches to Cleveland. As you can tell by how the Ravens' offensive staff is shaping up, that's obviously not a problem for coach John Harbaugh.
John Eisenberg, of the team's official website, believes there is little downside to the hiring of Kubiak as offensive coordinator. "The only drawback might be that Kubiak doesn’t stick around for long," Eisenberg wrote. "He’s a proven winner as a head coach, the kind who will be up for jobs, especially if things go well in Baltimore. Shoot, one of the reasons he wasn’t in the OC race originally was he supposedly was in the mix for Cleveland’s head coaching opening."
