What do you mean, "I missed your chat?"
Excuses don't fly here on the Big 12 blog, unless they're from me. I guess I'll try to get you up to speed. Here's the full transcript, with some highlights below.
I'll have my usual Friday mailbag, so send me your questions, and they might show up on here tomorrow.
Ryan in Dallas asked: Hey David, Huge KU fan here. I know the story is still very new but how do you think Conner Teahan will fare at QB with a potential 3 years of eligibilty. Do you feel at 6'5" 200+ that he could maybe work himself into a quality role at QB or maybe even make a career out of it? thanks as always.
David Ubben: I think Teahan just wants to give it a shot, maybe out of boredom with KU's season ending earlier than most thought it would. With a new coaching staff, and a guy that everyone seems to want to play for, why not? Gill said after practice yesterday it was, admittedly, "a long shot." But it'll be fun to watch at least. I think the KU QB race is still between Pick and Mecham.
Elliott in Columbia asked: What does the year under Blaine Gabbert's belt mean for him as he progresses as an upperclassman?
David Ubben: Like most players in college, it means he's going to get better. QBs don't come with much better pedigree or stature than Gabbert, and he's coming along nicely. I really think Missouri would be served well to try and feature the tight end more this season. They've got two pretty good pass-catching TEs in Michael Egnew and Andrew Jones, and one of them becoming a safety blanket could take some pressure off the receivers who haven't been the main targets before. But, there's not much reason to think Gabbert won't be due for another big year in 2010.
Bill Snyder took some time away from his busy schedule to stop by the blog and ask: David - Who do you think I should pick to play QB for me?
David Ubben: Coffman is the conservative choice, but I really, really want to see Chris Harper in person. At 6-foot-3 and 225, with his speed, I think that just adds a whole new element to the offense. And think about past quarterbacks Snyder's had. Ell Roberson. Michael Bishop. Dual-threat guys in every sense of the word.
Nate in Houston asked: As an OSU fan I have enjoyed the last 4 years as OSU has had the B12 rushing title....should everyone else be worried that UT is actually going to try to run the ball?
David Ubben: Probably, and here's why: In past years, Texas was always kind of trying to find "a guy." Just find someone who can give them some solid carries. This year, without Colt, they've changed their entire approach on offense. I talked to Fozzy Whittaker yesterday, who said, with them running downhill now more than getting the ball out of the shotgun, it's going to allow them to get a lot more steam and get a lot more yards after contact. But with a Heisman finalist at quarterback, there was no point in doing that previously. Texas has talent in the backfield, and I really think it's going to emerge this year.
