Texas wide receiver Marquise Goodwin missed out on spring practice with new quarterback Garrett Gilbert, electing to spend his time on the track...track. He made his absence worth it, winning a Big 12 title in the long jump.
His winning jump of 26-0.75 gave the Longhorns their first title in the event since 2001 and the first jump of over 26 feet since 2003.
"We've been dealing with the hamstring stuff for most of the seaosn, and I just started feeling really good a couple of weeks ago. I thought I had a chance for some big jumps today," Goodwin said. "I got off to a good start and on my fourth jump, I hit a big one, but scratched, so I knew it was there. Then, on that fifth attempt, I got the 26-footer. It was a tough competition with so many great jumpers, so it feels really good to be the Big 12 champion."
Goodwin caught 30 passes for 279 yards and a touchdown last season, including a career-high 70 yards in the national championship game. His lone touchdown came in the Red River Rivalry win over Oklahoma.
On Sunday, Goodwin took a handoff in the 4x100 relay from a guy used to receiving handoffs, running back Fozzy Whittaker, who made his track debut as the leadoff leg for the relay team. The Longhorns finished 10th with a time of 41.44 seconds.
