Mangino did that and more by signing two quarterbacks to head his 24-man class announced on Wednesday.
The Jayhawks attracted Christian Matthews from James Bowie High School in Arlington, Texas, and Jordan Webb of Union, Mo., Webb, ranked as the nation's 43rd best quarterback by Scouts Inc., has already started his college work and will participate in spring drills next month.
"These are two outstanding quarterbacks to bring into the program," Mangino said. "Both can throw the ball, are very intelligent and can beat with you with their feet. We felt like we had to recruit well at the quarterback position and we got quality."
The Jayhawks made back-to-back bowl appearances for the first time in school history. Mangino thinks his incoming recruiting class will help to build athleticism for the program.
"It's a class that is very talented," Mangino said. "We think we've got some good kids, but you never know until you get them onto a Big 12 field. But we feel comfortable about the group we have."
The 24-man group includes three junior-college players and high school players from eight different states. Nine high-school players come from Texas, four more from Kansas and two apiece from Florida and Oklahoma.
