Several key Sooners will miss spring work

Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops confirmed that several projected starters will miss spring practice as they recover from injuries.

Defensive end Auston English, recovering from a knee sprain sustained late last season, will miss the Sooners' spring work for a second consecutive spring. Tight end Brody Eldridge, who struggled with a recurring sprained ankle in 2008, will likely be held out for the first half of the spring, Stoops said.

Linebackers Ryan Reynolds (knee) and Austin Box (elbow), defensive tackle DeMarcus Granger (back) and running back DeMarco Murray (leg) all are recovering from surgeries and will miss spring work.

Stoops also said he would limit contact drills for veteran players like running back Chris Brown, tight end Jermaine Gresham and several others.

Keeping Gresham from participating in the contact drills will be particularly difficult, Stoops said.

"I'm not interested in seeing him tackled or dragged down from behind," Stoops said. "When we get into the live scrimmages, I don't see him doing a lot. He won't like it, but I don't want to take a chance."
