Today is a getaway day as I drive back to San Antonio after spending the weekend following a little college baseball in the NCAA tournament.
But before I depart "The Space City," I couldn't leave you without a few links for your lunchtime edification.
Here's some of the best from this morning:
- The Kansas City Star's Blair Kerkhoff writes about the disconnect present when colleges attempt to pay coaches record salaries at the same time they are cutting other athletic costs to remain financially viable.
- Dan Hawkins will add coaching Colorado's wide receivers to his duties, the Boulder Camera's Kyle Ringo reports. Ringo also reports in a chat that Josh Smith did not drop in the depth chart before leaving, and how Smith's departure could impact his cousin, Colorado running back Darrell Scott.
- The Ames Tribune's Bobby LaGesse reports that moving the Iowa-Iowa State game on Sept. 12 to 11 a.m. will be a boon for spectators, and particularly tailgaters.
- Only about 17 percent of more than 2,100 respondents to a Manhattan Mercury poll indicate that they think that former Kansas State athletic director Bob Krause was a "fall guy" in the recent Ron Prince contract buyout saga.
- Two of Kansas' first three games will be nationally televised this season, the Lawrence Journal-Star reports. The Jayhawks' game against UTEP on Sept. 12 will be shown on CBS College Sports and the Sept. 19 game against Duke will be shown by Versus.
- Matthew Zemek of College Football News predicts that Baylor will generate the most national excitement during the month of September.
- The Columbia Daily Tribune's Dave Matter explains why Missouri's series with Illinois is being dropped and who might be replacing them in his weekly "Case of the Mondays." Matter also ranks the Big 12's worst nonconference games.
- The Oklahoman's Jake Trotter reports that details of a secondary NCAA violation for Oklahoma were revealed in a Columbus Dispatch story over the weekend.
- Tulsa World sports editor Mike Strain laments Texas' pillow-soft nonconference schedule, writing the Longhorns' array of nonconference opponents likely won't give them too much bounce in the BCS rankings.
- Lincoln Journal Star reporters Brian Christopherson, Steve Sipple and Kent Wolgamott discuss a possible preseason ranking for Nebraska.
- Athlon's preseason magazine ranks Texas No. 3 nationally.
