Texas has soared in the Tuscaloosa News' annual best college football rankings, which rank football programs on a variety of objective and subjective categories.

The Longhorns were ranked ninth in the poll last season, but are fourth in the 2009 poll.

The newspaper bases its rankings on 10 categories. The top 25 schools were ranked in each category, with points awarded similar to the weekly Associated Press poll, going from 25-24-23, down to 3-2-1.

Five of the 10 categories are based on the past year's performance, the rest are based on a program's history, but slightly weighted to emphasize the modern era of football in the last 80 years.

Categories measuring the past year's performance include: Associated Press poll rankings, recruiting rankings, attendance figures, the number of players on opening-day NFL rosters and Academic Progress Rates.

Among historical categories were bowl appearances, Associated Press-awarded national championships, the All-Time Associated Press poll, College Football Hall of Fame inductees and coaching legacy.

The top 10 in order includes Ohio State, USC, Alabama, Texas, Michigan, Oklahoma, Penn State, Notre Dame, Georgia and Tennessee.

Here's a list of the eight Big 12 teams that were ranked among the 74 schools that received votes.

4. Texas
6. Oklahoma
13. Nebraska
19. Texas A&M
38. Texas Tech
56. Oklahoma State
62. Missouri
65. Colorado
