Kansas wide receiver Dezmon Briscoe's playing status in the program is tenuous with preseason practice set for Aug. 6.

Kansas coach Mark Mangino told Kansas fans Sunday during a trip to the Kansas Museum of History in Topeka, Kan., that Briscoe still isn't assured of playing with the Jayhawks this fall.

"He's on the team and he's day to day," Mangino told the Topeka Capital-Journal. "He's got work to do and he's got to take care of it. It's up to him."

Briscoe was a member of the media's preseason All-Big 12 team announced last week, but has been in Mangino's doghouse since the end of the 2008 season. He was suspended for most of the spring for an undisclosed violation of team rules and missed the Jayhawks' spring game before he was reinstated on April 22.

Briscoe set a Kansas record for receiving yards (1,407) and receiving touchdowns (15) last season as the Jayhawks' most prolific deep threat. His 269 receiving yards against Oklahoma were the most in an NCAA game last season.

Additionally, Briscoe holds the Kansas school record with 22 career touchdown grabs and is only 20 receptions from breaking Mark Simmons' career record of 155.

His potential loss would be huge for the Jayhawks, stripping away their top receiving threat from a team picked to contend for its first berth in the Big 12 championship game.

Mangino also told reporters that quarterback-turned-receiver Kerry Meier will play at his new position all the time with his backup quarterback duties now given to redshirt freshman Kale Pick and freshman Jordan Webb.

But he hopes that Meier still will be grouped with Briscoe and Johnathan Wilson, which would give the Jayhawks one of the nation's top receiving corps if Briscoe is eligible.
