Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops said he's not concerned about punting into the scoreboard at the Dallas Cowboys' new stadium in Arlington, Texas, in the Sooners' Sept. 5 opener against BYU.
As a matter of fact, Stoops told reporters that it would be "a plus" if one of his Sooners hit the massive scoreboard.
Stoops said that if Tress Way was able to hit the scoreboard -- as Tennessee Titans punter A.J. Trapasso did in the opening game in the stadium's history last week -- it would mean he was "hitting it like you want to," Stoops said.
The Sooners are hoping that Way will help boost production after struggles last season in the punting game. Oklahoma ranked 85th nationally in net punting and Mike Knall was 98th with an average of 36.5 yards per kick.
Way has been the most consistent punter in camp. But Stoops also said that wide receiver Cameron Kenney could be a wild card in the punting game because of his speed and his consistency in rugby-style punts.
"He's a guy that can really run with it; he's a guy that can give you something extra if you snap it to him, he can pull it down and run with it," Stoops said. "He's got a good leg, so we'll keep working him, probably with punting more than anything else."
But it will be interesting to see if the Cowboys adjust the scoreboard after so much early controversy.
If Stoops has any say, he sounds like he would prefer keeping the scoreboard as it is.
He's more excited about playing in the debut college game in the new $1.2 billion facility than to complain about any of the facility's playing quirks.
