Missouri quarterback Tyler Gabbert plans to transfer, the school announced on Monday morning.

Gabbert, a redshirt freshman, had been competing with James Franklin throughout the spring, but Missouri's coaches placed Franklin atop the depth chart to end the spring.

The Tigers had indicated that the competition would continue into the fall, but now, it looks like the job is all but Franklin's. Gabbert's departure leaves Ashton Glaser as the likely backup. He had competed with Franklin and Gabbert during the spring, but coaches indicated the competition had boiled down to a two-man race by the end of the fall.

"We wish Tyler the best and will do everything we can to assist him going forward," Missouri coach Gary Pinkel said in a release. “He’s worked very hard in our program this past year, and we thank him for his efforts. Tyler is a high quality person and an outstanding football player."

Gabbert's older brother, Blaine Gabbert, started the past two seasons for Missouri before leaving for the NFL after his junior year in 2010. He was selected 10th overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars in April's NFL draft.
