Big 12 braces for big recruiting day

We're still eight months away from signing day, but Wednesday is a big day for college football, especially in June.

ESPN Recruiting will debut its ESPNU 150, the list of the nation's top 150 recruits, and also debut its first class rankings, naming the top 25 recruiting classes at this point in the recruiting game.

The Big 12 is likely to have a big presence on both lists, even after the ESPNU 150 Watch list is preened from the several hundred currently designated to the number that gives the list its name.

We've taken a few looks at this periodically in the past, but heading into Wednesday's big day (we'll have more on this later today, too), here's where the Big 12's teams sit in the recruiting game.

All numbers are courtesy ESPNU recruiting pages. You can see them by clicking on each team for more on each class. The teams are ranked below according to their number of ESPNU 150 Watch List commitments.

1. Texas Longhorns

Total commits: 17

ESPNU 150 Watch List commits: 17

Key commits: RB Johnathan Gray, DT Malcom Brown, WR Cayleb Jones, QB Connor Brewer

Personnel notes: Seven of the Longhorns' commits are offensive players, nine are on defense and another is designated as an athlete. Four of the top five commits, however, are skill-position players.

2. Texas A&M Aggies

Total commits: 21

ESPNU 150 Watch List commits: 11

Key commits: OLB Jordan Richmond, RB Trey Williams, ATH Bralon Addison, ATH Matt Davis

Personnel notes: The Aggies swiped Addison from Oklahoma State and gave themselves four commits that are designated as athletes. Eight of their other commits are on defense, and nine play offense.

3. Oklahoma State Cowboys

Total commits: 7

ESPNU 150 Watch List commits: 4

Key commits: ILB Dalton Santos, TE Dominic Ramacher, CB Kendall Sanders, OLB Jeremiah Tshimanga

Personnel notes: Three of Oklahoma State's four ESPNU 150 Watch Listers are on defense. Just two of the seven overall commits play offense. Of the five defenders, three are defensive backs. Santos and Tshimanga are both linebackers.

3. Texas Tech Red Raiders

Total commits: 7

ESPNU 150 Watch List commits: 4

Key commits: WR Reginald Davis, OT Michael Starts, OT Christian Okafor, QB Clayton Nicholas

Personnel notes: Starts was the latest addition, picking the Red Raiders over a handful of Big 12 teams. Five of the Red Raiders' commits play offense, one is a defender and Keenon Ward is the lone athlete.

3. Oklahoma Sooners

Total commits: 7

ESPNU 150 Watch List commits: 4

Key commits: RB Alex Ross, WR Sterling Shepard, OT Kyle Marrs, CB Devante Harris

Personnel notes: The Sooners will likely sign a smaller class in 2012, but they hosted one of the nation's top recruits, WR Dorial Green-Beckham, last weekend on an unofficial visit. Four of Oklahoma's commits play offense, two others are defensive backs and the other is listed as an athlete.

6. Baylor Bears

Total commits: 8

ESPNU 150 Watch List commits: 2

Key commits: ATH Corey Coleman, CB Terrell Burt, WR Kiante' Griffin, ATH Terrence Singleton

Personnel notes: The Bears have three athletes in the group, two defensive backs, two offensive linemen and a receiver.

7. Missouri Tigers

Total commits: 5

ESPNU 150 Watch List commits: 1

Key commits: RB Jonathan Williams, OLB Torey Boozer, RB Morgan Steward, S Chaston Cuffee

Personnel notes: The Tigers have two linebackers and two running backs committed, as well as Cuffee, a safety. Green-Beckham, from Springfield, Mo., is a big catch Missouri is likely to pursue hard in the near future.

8. Iowa State Cyclones

Total commits: 4

ESPNU 150 Watch List commits: 0

Key commits: WR Quan West, QB Grant Rohach, RB Barkley Hill, QB Luke Knott

Personnel notes: The Cyclones are reeling in skill-position players, and Knott is the younger brother of current star linebacker Jake Knott.

9. Kansas State Wildcats

Total commits: 3

ESPNU 150 Watch List commits: 0

Key commits: WR Vernon Vaughn, QB Tay Bender, ILB Will Davis

Personnel notes: The Wildcats' three commits are all from high school, but the safe bet is they'll soon be joined by some juco commits.

10. Kansas Jayhawks

Total commits: 1

ESPNU 150 Watch List commits: 0

Key commits: CB Daniel Gray

Personnel notes: Turner Gill reeled in a great class in 2011, but he'll be playing a bit of catch-up over the next eight months with just one commit so far.
