Big 12's reign as top conference is over

10/17/2011

Texas and Baylor lost on Saturday by double digits, and as a result, fell out of both polls.

After that, the Big 12 has surrendered its four-week perch atop the ESPN Stats and Info conference rankings back to the SEC, which dominated the ranking for all of last season.

Losses by the Baylor Bears and Texas Longhorns hurt the Big 12 in the conference rankings as both schools dropped out of the AP Top 25 and fell in the computer rankings. While the Big 12 is the only conference with three undefeated teams, intra-conference losses have diminished the strong starts of many Big 12 schools.

No big surprise there. The gap between the SEC and Big 12 is less than half a point, while 16 full points separate the Big 12 and the No. 3 league, the Big Ten.

The Big 12 held on to the No. 1 ranking in the computers, however.

The Big Ten got a boost with some parity when two of its three undefeated teams lost on Saturday, but look for mostly just jostling until bowl season, unless one of the Big 12's three top 15 teams hits a losing skid.
