New Mexico's plan of keeping last week's game against Texas A&M in Albuquerque instead of moving it to San Antonio backfired miserably.

Lobo officials thought that the appeal for A&M could drive premium pricing for the game with tickets at $50. Instead, despite ideal weather, the game attracted a crowd of 28,007 -- not even filling University Stadium three-quarters full.

Bryan Eagle columnist Robert Cessna reported this morning that New Mexico officials were offered a $1.8 million guarantee to move the game to the Alamodome in San Antonio where A&M fans likely would have packed the stadium. A similar neutral-site game for the Aggies against Army in 2006 attracted a near-sellout crowd of 64,583 to the Alamodome.

New Mexico kept the home game. But the Lobos ended up with a 28-22 loss and much less money than they would have made if they would have moved the game.
