Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops is giving back some of the conference's top coaching salary by making a significant contribution to his university.
Stoops and his wife, Carol, will donate $150,000 to Oklahoma to establish the Bob Stoops Business Faculty Fellow Program within the Michael F. Price College of Business.
It's an area of interest to both Stoops and his wife. Stoops received a marketing degree when he graduated from Iowa in 1983. And his wife is a successful entrepreneur who is one of fewer that 400 people worldwide to earn the title of independent national director of Mary Kay Inc.
The Stoops' program will assist untenured assistant professors in the college with their research into the areas of accounting, finance, management, management information systems and marketing and supply-chain management.
“We all value exceptional faculty members,” Stoops said. “I had a number of good instructors during my time in the business school at Iowa and was unaware at that time that donors were contributing to the overall health of the university and my education."
Other coaches have provided gifts to their schools in different areas. Penn State coach Joe Paterno and his wife donated to his school's library.
But Stoops' gift will provide a lasting legacy to Oklahoma.
I still think Stoops will leave Oklahoma for another coaching challenge later in his career. But I can't see it happening anytime soon -- as evidenced by his family's generous gift back to the school.
