Our friends at RecruitingNation took a look at recruiting spending across the nation this week, topped by a column from colleague Mitch Sherman.
ESPN.com gathered budget data from 99 of 120 Football Bowl Subdivision programs for the 2011 and 2010 fiscal years. Private schools such Notre Dame, USC, Stanford and Miami did not report figures, in addition to colleges in Pennsylvania, where laws do not require public schools to disclose data.

The numbers, from one program to the next, raise eyebrows.

For instance, why did Army and Memphis rank among the top spenders in football recruiting when their revenues paled in comparison to schools from the Southeastern Conference and other power leagues?

It's fascinating data, and here's a look at how the Big 12 ranked in the 2010 and 2011 recruiting seasons.

2010
  • Texas Tech: $812,217
  • Oklahoma: $452,601
  • Iowa State: $447,662
  • Kansas: $366,331
  • Kansas State: $363,172
  • Texas: $329,736
  • West Virginia: $207,933
  • Oklahoma State: $181,429
  • Baylor: n/a
  • TCU: n/a
2011
  • Texas Tech: $611,910
  • Texas: $577,976
  • Iowa State: $448,777
  • Kansas: $442,911
  • Kansas State: $361,196
  • Oklahoma: $356,414
  • Oklahoma State: $226,475
  • West Virginia: $380,061
  • Baylor: n/a
  • TCU: n/a

ESPN RecruitingNation's Dave Hooker tabbed Texas Tech as the only Big 12 team Insider getting the most bang for its buck, or overspending. Clearly, the Red Raiders are overspending.

Hooker's right about that. And in the Red Raiders' defense, they've nabbed recruits from Florida, Louisiana, Maryland, North Carolina, Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania, and New Mexico in the 2010 and 2011 classes. That's a national approach that not many schools in the Big 12 employ.

Texas' jump from 2010 to 2011 is interesting, as is West Virginia's jump, spending nearly twice as much in 2011 as it did in 2010.
