Senior Steele Jantz will start Iowa State's season opener against Tulsa, the university announced on Tuesday.

Jantz beat out sophomore Jared Barnett to win the starting job that both players shared last season.

"Steele has demonstrated the skill set that I think is ideal for our offense," coach Paul Rhoads said in a statement. "The main point is that we have depth at the quarterback position with two men who led us to a second bowl game appearance in three years."

Jantz started the first seven games of last season, but inconsistency led Rhoads to give Barnett, then a freshman, a chance. He led the Cyclones to wins over Texas Tech, Kansas and an upset of No. 2 Oklahoma State to send Iowa State to the Pinstripe Bowl.

Barnett struggled in the bowl loss to Rutgers, which re-opened the quarterback job when Jantz played late in the loss.

Jantz finished 2011 with 1,519 yards, 10 touchdowns and 11 interceptions on 138-of-259 (53.3 percent) passing.

Barnett was 110-of-220 (50 percent) for 1,201 yards and six touchdowns with six interceptions.

Barnett rushed for 437 yards and a touchdown. Jantz rushed for 216 yards and two scores.
