In any given week, the best player in the Big 12 just deflates an opposing team and its fans’ spirits. Nobody did that like Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein this week.

He was, quite simply, unstoppable in Saturday’s 55-14 win over West Virginia, and while the offense floundered, Klein’s play assured that the defense would give the Mountaineers no shot to keep it a game.

Klein’s teammate Chris Harper said he was pretty sure Klein had never thrown for 300 yards in even a high school game. Well, he did it on Saturday in the latest exhibition and proof that Klein is a whole new quarterback this season.

He completed 19-of-21 passes for 323 yards and three touchdowns.

Which quarterback is the guy tossing more TDs than incompletions? It wasn’t Geno Smith on this night.

He also scored four touchdowns on the ground and rushed for 41 yards. After the game, Klein lamented the things the Wildcats “just can’t have,” like settling for a field goal at the end of a long drive.

Apparently, scoring touchdowns on your next seven drives just isn’t enough for a team that refuses to limit its own capabilities and focuses on the program’s mantra of daily improvement.

Some teams talk it. The Wildcats personify it, and nobody more than Klein, who continues to get better and better as a passer, and tougher and tougher as a runner. He was in total command all night against the Mountaineers, and had the WVU fans stuck in a traffic jam outside the stadium by the end of the third quarter.

For his efforts, Klein earned the Walter Camp National Player of the Week, and there’s no question about the Big 12 award this week. Klein was by far the best player in the league this week.
