Nebraska coach Bo Pelini said Tuesday there will be in-house discipline for defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh for his recent automobile accident, but he was proud of the responsibility he showed immediately after the incident.
Suh hit three cars along a Lincoln residential street early Sunday morning when he said he swerved to avoid hitting a dog or cat on the road, Lincoln police department records indicate. The incident occurred several hours after the Cornhuskers had returned home from a victory against Baylor on Saturday.
Pelini said that he was proud of how Suh took responsibility immediately after the accident.
"He called me right away and told me where he is, what happened," Pelini said Tuesday during his weekly news conference. "It was an accident and I thought he handled it in the right way."
Lincoln police have cited Suh on suspicion of negligent driving. But later tests indicated that Suh was well below the legal limit for drunken driving, the Lincoln Journal-Star reported.
Pelini said Tuesday that Suh will receive in-house discipline, but that will be because he was out so late.
Earlier in his coaching tenure, Pelini said there was a zero-tolerance alcohol policy for his players.
But Suh's incident is different because he was not drunk, Pelini said.
"The zero tolerance is for drunkenness,” Pelini said. “He was far from drunk. I know where he was and what he did that night, and that doesn’t fall under that category. I deal with that on a case-by-case basis.”
Pelini answered questions about Suh's incident, but the senior defensive tackle did not take any questions about the accident during his appearance later at the news conference.
And it would be a great surprise for me if Suh isn't in the starting lineup Saturday night when the Cornhuskers meet Oklahoma in Lincoln.
