Alamo Bowl officially replaces Cotton Bowl

The Cotton Bowl will be graduating back into "Big Bowl" status when the College Football Playoff begins, and the Alamo Bowl will benefit.

It's been rumored for a while, but now it's official.

The Alamo Bowl will get the first pick from the Big 12 under a new six-year deal with the Pac-12 announced Friday.

It makes the Alamo Bowl the marquee game for the Big 12 outside the new four-team College Football Playoff that begins next year. The Cotton Bowl had previously been the signature game for Big 12 teams that didn't make the Bowl Championship Series.

The Sugar Bowl (aka Champions Bowl, but not for much longer) will still get any Big 12 champion that doesn't qualify for the playoff, but it's a good day in San Antonio for the Alamo Bowl crew.
