We're wrapping our look into the future this week at ESPN.com, and colleague Travis Haney picked a team or two from every league who can perhaps expect a big season in 2014.
I couldn't agree more with his selections from the Big 12: Texas Tech and Baylor. The Red Raiders are his official pick, but he says to keep an eye on the Bears in honorable mention.
I expect Year 1 to be pretty average for the Red Raiders, but in Year 2 for Michael Brewer in Kingsbury's fast-paced offense, we could see him blossom into a star. When you've got a game-changer at quarterback, you're simply going to win a whole lot of games in the Big 12.
Haney and I agree that calling them a major contender for the Big 12 title might be a stretch, but just like Baylor in the past couple years, they could be a major stumbling block for the rest of the league and a solid top 20 team.
The Bears will be opening a new stadium in 2014 and just like Texas Tech, could have a second-year starter at quarterback coming into his own as a bona fide star. Bryce Petty and Brewer are loaded with potential, and you can bet one thing for sure: Any major success in 2014 for either program will be spearheaded by quarterback play.
